Where are you from and what do you do?

I grew up in upstate New York (well outside commuting distance from Manhattan, about 4 hours drive), and while I have lived in 6 states and The District of Columbia, Atlanta Georgia has been home for 12 of the past 25 years.

I am a photographer specialising in destination images and portraits of bearded men. My work with Modern Bear saw my clients honoured more consistently as Beefcakes than any other photographer in 2014.

The whole portfolio of the 21 Beefcakes of the Week can be seen at ManshotsByDave.tumblr.com and my photographer page can be followed at facebook.com/dudarphotos.

What is the secret to consuming a beverage without soaking it up in your beard?

Straws help.

What were you doing with yourself prior to growing a beard?

I’ve had my beard, consistently, since September 1999. For about a year before that, I had grown a goatee. But for the first 32 years of my life, I was bald-faced.

How do comments about your beard differ from those about your hair?

Funny, as I’ve been growing both out recently. I know my head hair isn’t as white as my beard – which never really was salt & pepper as much as it went straight to salt. I get compliments on my head of hair and my current cut–which is particularly cool at 51 (to have a full head of hair and all). People either love or hate the long beard.

Who has the world’s most majestic beard and why?

There are all those very au courant models now: Ricki Hall, Chris John Millington, Chris Percival, Levi Stocke, Lane Toran. Then again, I’d point out men in my Facebook friends’ list for some awesome beards as well–from Gabe Laduke to John Metzner, Rob Yow to Eric Bandholz.

How do you feel about shaving?

I’ve had a beard for 15 and a half years. Nuff said.

Describe your perfect partner.

As for looks, see “Majestic Beards” above… Ha!

But beyond looks, a guy who can put up with my idiosyncrasies, and sees more of my potential than my flaws. Someone who excites me daily, but who I can still introduce to my parents with pride.

In what way does having a beard influence one’s sex appeal?

For me, it is kind of a prerequisite for my being attracted to a guy. I think it telegraphs an instant masculinity.

How would you react to someone touching your beard without warning?

I really don’t like it, and am always a bit surprised when someone approaches my beard as if it is a petting zoo. People, I don’t know where your hands have been more recently…

What in life are you most proud of?

That list is likely too long for the space here.

But for starters, I am lucky enough to have traveled extensively – 43 countries on five continents, and all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and the USVI.

My career has been notably varied – while I’ve seen recent success building my photography business, my work in travel and transportation has stretched from United Airlines, to heading up marketing for two noteworthy luxury hotel brands, to starting up the convention and visitors’ bureau for the city that houses Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – the world’s busiest.

And now starting up my own business. While I love having my creative talents evolve, with every bit of progress, I amaze myself. I can understand why entrepreneurs become addicted to adrenaline.
